Who Dares Wins!

Who Dares Wins!

On this day, exactly 3 years ago, I reached the Mont-Blanc summit at 4,809 meters.

For me, it represented a culmination of me using my value of daring and my strong belief that when you dare, you win.

During that week in 2019 that led me to climb the Mont-Blanc, I went beyond my fear of height, challenged myself to not give up, even after hanging (safely secured!) over a 2,000-meter void and not liking it at all, and I learned to trust our guide in a matter of hours, as he was the only one who knew how to bring us to the top.

In fact, “Who dares wins”, the British SAS motto, has been one of my favorite quotes for years. It reminds me that if you want to reach the big dreams and goals you’re setting for yourself in life or at work, you have to step up, be courageous, and take some risks that will pay off.

To some extent, this is not different from what I encounter in my leadership role.

Daring is part of the game, for instance to take action without asking permission, or to continuously challenge yourself to learn and train, do things, make mistakes along the way, and learn from these mistakes.

Daring is the number #1 value I am trying hard to spread in the teams I work or worked with. I want people on my teams to dare do things without fearing failure. First because I will offer air cover in my role as the team leader to protect them when they make decisions and try things, even if they are not successful. And two, because I am a strong believer that in order to learn something valuable – and remember it – you have to fail at it at some point.

I have not always been successful in spreading that vision. Part of it I believe is bad communication, or a lack of clarity. 2 things that remain key in creating the space for your team where people can try, fail, and learn. Such a space will also get people more empowered and engaged and as a result, the team will be more collaborative and more productive.

How are you letting your people dare? What have you tried that worked? Tell me in the comments.
