The Switch from Individual Contributor to Team Leader

The Switch from Individual Contributor to Team Leader

Switching from individual contributor to team leader is a significant change.

That’s nothing new to anyone.

How significant the change is though can be hard to grasp at first.

When I was an individual contributor, my typical day was filled with:

1️⃣ Meetings where I needed to present results and analyzes

2️⃣ Projects I was part of, or maybe leading after delegation by my manager

3️⃣ Routine tasks that allowed me to accomplish my work

4️⃣ Learning, training, being curious about things I did not know

5️⃣ Focusing on the doing

As a leader, my typical days are now filled with:

1️⃣ Focusing on getting things done by the team

2️⃣ Coaching performance, providing feedback, having regular 1-1’s

3️⃣ Getting resources, hiring employees, offering “air cover” to the team

4️⃣ Learning, training, being curious about things I did not know

5️⃣ Meetings or calls where a more strategic view is required

Making a successful shift between individual contributor and manager is very hard. What most people find challenging is going from “doing” to “getting things done”. In fact, this is one of the top challenges that my coaching clients who are first-time managers tell me about first.
