The 4-Step Process to Build Personal Leadership Brand

How do you stand out from the crowd as a leader?

The answer is: Personal leadership branding.

Your personal leadership brand defines your unique identity, what leader you want to be. It differentiates you by showing the value you bring as a leader.

Your personal leadership brand also helps you focus on what matters to you, what your values are, and how you will convey these to your team and in your organization.

How do you go about defining your personal leadership brand?

1. Start with your values. What matters to you? What gives you energy? What did you feel when you had peak experiences?

2. Define what you want to be known for. For instance, if you want to be known for helping people grow their career, or for being a strong business partner to your organization, come up with a brand statement that says this.

3. Walk the talk. Now that you have a brand statement, make sure that you consistently make it known to others, i.e., it becomes real. You can do this by telling people “hey, this is my leadership brand statement, please give me feedback on how well I fare” or by living it so passionately that people around you will see it clearly.

4. Communicate, communicate, communicate. If you want to be known for something that adds value to your organization and showcases you as a strong leader, keep communicating about it. In today’s world, this can also include writing regularly on social media about topics aligned with your leadership brand.

A personal leadership brand is a must have if you want your work to have the impact it should. It matters to be successful in the position you have or the position you want.

When is the last time you worked on your personal leadership brand? It is not too late to start or update it. Tell me in the comments what you discovered in the process.
