The Best Leadership Advice: Know Your People!

The Best Leadership Advice: Know Your People!

“Know your people” is one of the best leadership advice I have ever received.

It is a key skill to practice in order to lead your team to improved collaboration and performance.

It all starts with an assumption that is at the core of why you need to know your people.

The assumption is that nobody we meet at work is evil, nobody purposely comes at work to not do a good job.

Based on this, when people struggle, the best way to help them is to ask questions, coach them, and get the story behind.

This is where knowing your people matters. When you know the people on your team, you understand what they like and dislike in their work, you know what interests them, what makes them tick, you know what they feel passionate about at work or in their life.

Once you know these things, it becomes easier to get the story behind why someone on your team is struggling. And then you can discuss with them, coach them, and support them so they get out of that struggle and contribute again to the team.

You can’t wait until something blows up at work to discover that someone on your team is struggling. You have to see it by yourself as early as possible.

The key to do this: Make the time to talk to your people. This is about having regular 1-1’s with the people on your team. And it is also about making the time whenever someone needs you. This is your role as a leader: Making the time for the people on your team when they need you.

What have you done to make time for your people? Get to know them? Tell me in the comments.
