Recover from a Setback

“I failed miserably on a few occasions in life.”

How is that statement true for you?

My childhood dream was to become a doctor. I failed the French medical school examination twice. After my MBA at Columbia, I started a wine tasting venture and within a year was broke!

What did I learn from that? How did I recover?

I learned that I should not have any regret about failing, because I honestly gave my best at studying medicine or building up my wine venture. It really felt bad when I realized I had failed. At the same time, failing allowed me to really focus on what was important to me. And from this, I built a successful future.

Recovering had to do with understanding my long term goals, being focused on me, and not try to become someone else that I would not like. This helped me become the kind of leader I wanted to be too.

And for you, what has worked? If you have recently failed and you are still resentful about your failure, what is one thing you can drop or let go now that will make you focus on you and what you want to achieve in the future? What’s your next goal?
