My Big Red Lines

My Big Red Lines

Don’t cross that red line (well OK, it’s yellow) with me 🚫

As part of striving to be an authentic leader, there are a few values I won’t compromise on.

They are so important to me and so much a part of how I envision leadership that I will stand firm and strongly grounded, as the first line of defense for my team when these values are not honored.

These are the 2 values that are non-negotiable for me:

1. Respect
2. Take accountability to solve problems

Respect is a no-brainer.

Within the team and also in the relationships between the team and other teams, this should just be about cooperation, not conflict.

When conflicts happen, because they do happen, my belief is that people should still treat one another in a respectful way.

I have never hesitated talking to someone who acted disrespectfully with someone on my team.

And I made it clear to my team that I expect respect from everyone on the team and I want to know when someone is not treated respectfully.

Taking accountability to solve problems is related to something I learned from one of my mentors and which he defined by “Kill a snake”.

He really meant “When you see a problem arising, that’s the head of the snake, don’t wait for the snake to be so big that it becomes a huge issue for the organization. Take on yourself to kill the snake as soon as you see its head, even if the problem is not in your immediate area of responsibility.”

When people on my team identify problems, I want them to get proactive in being part of the solution. I don’t necessarily expect them to solve the problem. At the very least I do expect them to make sure everyone knows there is a problem and they will be a driving force in support of solving it.

I hate to hear things like “This is not my area.”, “This is a problem for them to solve”. Not constructive!

And for you, what are you no compromise values/rules as a leader?
