My 12-Week Leadership Challenge – Week 7

Week 7 of my 12-week leadership challenge.

Last week marked the end of looking at the second quarter of my leadership model, “Empowering the Team”. If you have read my posts, or participated in my 12-week challenge, what is a key learning for you in that area?

Now, and for the next 3 weeks, let’s turn to “Driving Change”!

Today is about coaching the team.

When asked, many people would say that they coach their team when they explain to them what they should do, when they teach them something, or when they leverage their own experience to give a solution to someone.

In fact, if you do that, this is not coaching, this is mentoring. There is nothing wrong with mentoring, it’s very efficient in a lot of situations.

Coaching is taking your leadership to a higher level though by building on the empowerment of the team to let people on the team utilize their own resources and creativity in order to find their own solutions to their challenges.

If you want to coach your team effectively, you must do 2 things:

👂 Listen. This is about not only listening to what someone says, but also focusing on how it is said: What is the body language, the emotions shared, what does the person really want to say?

❓ Ask questions. A good leader coach is someone who will speak less and listen more by asking questions that really allow a person to reflect, find solutions. These are not the “yes/no” questions, but rather the “What” and “How” questions, that trigger true learning and build on the trust you have build with the team.

Have you been coaching or mentoring your team? What step could you take now to focus more on coaching? How would that change the performance of your team?

If you want to go deeper in this topic, and learn of other things you may do in order to coach your team effectively, sign up for my free 12-week authentic leadership challenge and I will walk you through the 12 areas of my model.
