My 12-Week Leadership Challenge – Week 11

My 12-Week Leadership Challenge – Week 11

Week 11 of my 12-week leadership challenge.

Today is about keeping learning.

In a recent workshop I attended, one of the coaches said “The best leaders are the best learners” and I thought this quote was a perfect illustration of this week’s topic.

If you aspire to be an authentic leader, and be very effective, one of the key things you need to do is to be great at learning.

Learning is a long journey, with virtually no end to it. There is no stoppage of learning.

You can learn in multiple ways.

You can learn by reading books, articles, attending workshops and conferences.

You can learn by asking feedback to people about how you fare as a leader and what you could do to support people better.

You can learn by getting experience doing your job, making mistakes in the process, and realize what it is you can differently the next time.

You can learn by continuously challenging yourself to do new things, learn a new skill, get to work on a new project, change role in the organization.

You can learn by talking to your network, your mentor, your coach.

There is no limit to what and how you can learn!

Here are my 2 tips to give you the growth mindset that goes together with constant learning:

1. Learn to unlearn at times: Whatever you have learned at some point may become obsolete, irrelevant. Don’t stick to that knowledge if it is no longer applicable. Don’t get frustrated. Just stay curious about where the new learning is taking you!

2. Stay curious, question all your beliefs, stay open to others’ perspectives (especially if working in a multi-cultural environment), and use really ANY opportunity to learn, even from a negative event or outcome.

This is my challenge for you this week. Think about a leadership challenge you have. Now, instead of thinking about all the bad things that this brings, think about the one thing you can learn from this challenge. What step will you now take to use that learning and transform that challenge into something positive?
