My 12-Week Leadership Challenge – Week 10

Week 10 of my 12-week leadership challenge.

Last week marked the end of looking at the third quarter of my leadership model, “Driving Change”. If you have read my posts, or participated in my 12-week challenge, what is a key learning for you in that area?

Now, and for the next 3 weeks, let’s turn to “Sharpen Your Saw”!

Today is about managing your time.

I borrowed the expression “sharpen your saw” from the late Stephen Covey. I love that expression, because it describes exactly the fact that if you continuously invest in yourself, then you’ll reap rewards continuously in life and at work.

And this is how I envision managing time: Investing my time in myself, in what matters to me in order to reap continuous benefits.

The #1 complaint I hear in the corporate world, in my team, in other teams, from friends, colleagues, is “I don’t have time for this”.

What most people don’t realize though is that time, and the hours in the day, are the easiest thing that people have control upon.

The real issue is that most people relinquish that control of THEIR time to others: People let other people plan meetings or calls in time slots they would have needed to do something else. Or they respond to emails well beyond the normal working hours, although the emails are not urgent.

Reflect on this question to check if you control your time: When Covid hit us and we had to work from home, how did you use your former commute time?

If you replied “I worked more”, then it is a good indication you fell in the trap.

Leveraging Stephen Covey’s wisdom, start by planning your day around the things that matter to you, that are important. Once it’s done, let meetings/calls be planned around these blocks. See the difference!

If you want to go deeper in this topic, and learn how to better manage your time, sign up for my free 12-week authentic leadership challenge and I will walk you through the 12 areas of my model.
