How Setbacks Can Help You Reach Your Goals

How Setbacks Can Help You Reach Your Goals

One of the “highlights” of my summer vacation was me suffering from a severe UTI.

It turns out that the UTI was my best ally to reach my goal of eating healthy during my summer vacation – OK, I really do not recommend getting a UTI on purpose to achieve any kind of goal!

If I had gone through my summer without the UTI, chances are, I would have embraced gluttony and put on some weight cancelling all my previous effort this year to get to the healthier version of me.

Getting the UTI had me not eat for most of 2 days to start with, and then I realize it was the perfect opportunity to refocus on this healthier version of me. I drank a lot of water, and ate healthy food to help with recovery. By doing this, I naturally realigned with the goal and commitments I had set for myself early this year.

The learning here is that when something bad happens, there is always an opportunity, a learning, a gift to get from it.

For instance, you lose a key client: Learn about what you can do better next time to anticipate issues with a client; or take any time you now have to focus more on your other key clients.

Or, you make a bad decision: Learn about what skill you need to develop to make a better decision next time

I could get plenty of other examples. The premise that a seemingly bad situation can be turned into a gift or an opportunity is a concept introduced by Shirzad Chamine in his book on Positive Intelligence.

My 7-week mental fitness bootcamp builds on Shirzad Chamine’s Positive Intelligence program and is supercharged with individual coaching to support you in increasing your resilience and tendency to act as a victim by shifting and strengthening your ability to focus on the positive outcomes of what sound like misfortunes.
