Fahrenheit 451 Book Recommendation

“We have everything we need to be happy, but we aren’t happy. Something’s missing.”

This quote from Ray Bradbury’s much acclaimed dystopian book “Fahrenheit 451” – which appears when Montag meets Faber at his place – summarizes very well how many of us feel when thinking about our career or life. We are successful, have great titles and perks, have a family, and yet, we are having that sense of emptiness, we are not happy. What is it that is missing then?

In the novel, Faber gives some clues related to how what was (sic) in books provides happiness. These clues are very much appropriate to us to create a path to happiness. Faber lists 3 things:

1. Quality of information / Translated to us, that means, how well do I know me? Am I aware of what matters to me? What makes me tick in life or at work?

2. Time/leisure to reflect / Translated to us, that means what are my goals, what are my values. What is my purpose in life or at work? How am I protecting my “me-time” in my busy agenda for my self-reflection?

3. Right to carry out actions / Translated to us, that means what will I do about this now? What action will I take to step up and live the life I want for myself?

What about you? How happy are you at work today? How aware are you of what matters to you? How could a coach help you identify your values and life purpose, and support you in crafting your action plan to achieve your goals?
